What's the perfect place to go stand-up paddling in the middle of summer? The great lakes of the Alps, without a doubt! Calm, clear turquoise waters, breathtaking scenery... paddling in the mountains is just as magical as at sea, if not more so.
Let's close our eyes and imagine being all alone in the world, balancing on a stand-up paddle (or SUP for those in the know), with sparkling turquoise water beneath our feet... Where are we? On the Côte d'Azur? Not at all: we're right in the middle of the Alps!
Today, we're taking you SUP sailing on the four great lakes of the Savoie Mont-Blanc region: Léman, Annecy, Bourget and Aiguebelette. With translucent waters approaching 25 degrees Celsius in summer, white sandy beaches and water sports activities, these lakes offer the same pleasures as the sea. But without the crowds or the mountains! So whether you're a beginner or an expert, climb on your stand-up paddle, find your balance... and set off to discover the lakes along the way.
Turquoise shades on Lake Annecy
Our SUP journey begins on the pleasant banks of Lake Annecy. Before our eyes, a turquoise gradation, mountains as far as the eye can see... the place seems unreal! Strollers stop for a moment to watch the seagulls and ducks performing at the water's edge. Stand up paddle under your feet, and you can get up close and personal with them. Soon, the silhouette of the château de Duingt, the impressive Chère rock and the splendid bay of Talloire come into view.
Postcard setting at Lac du Bourget
Another lake, another postcard setting: Le Bourget, France's largest natural lake. With paddle in hand, explore part of it from the Aix-les-Bains sailing club. You'll discover imposing mountains bordered by small beaches and the splendour of Hautecombe Abbey.
White sandy beach on Lake Geneva
In Thonon-les-Bains, still on your paddle, you can practise yoga on the clear waters of Lake Geneva. Then it's off for a stroll on the water, to catch a glimpse of the village from a little further away.
Sheltered from the wind at Lac d'Aiguebelette
This is the smallest of the four lakes mentioned for paddling, but it's still the third-largest natural lake in France. Sheltered from the wind, it offers calm water... ideal conditions for paddling! You can then set off to discover its wild coastline and its two adorable little islands. One of them is even home to a chapel.
