We all know the mountain hotspots where everyone goes for a drink and a bite to eat… but what if we swapped our old habits for a new cool? From current trends to places off the beaten track, we take stock of a few new gourmet experiences to share with friends.
Enjoy Japanese-Savoyard fusion in La Clusaz
Two beaufort-nut-blueberry sushi and pepper-goat-thyme sushi please! How could we compile a list of good restaurants without recommending at least one sushi place? Sushi Fumi, a new Japanese restaurant in La Clusaz, offers a blend of Savoyard specialties and Japanese culinary art. The two managers, Jérôme and Cyril, stand out for their accomplished and original sushi creations. Tip: the lunchtime set menu is just € 11.90, perfect for small budgets. Address: Sushi Fumi, 396 Rue du Col des Aravis, La Clusaz
Experiment with the ‘telefondue’ in Méribel
For the second consecutive season, it’s possible to share a good Savoyard fondue in a gondola perched at 2,500m in Méribel. You just have to book your place and the panoramic tour is yours. Everything starts with a drink in a giant igloo, then you continue to a soup bar before taking off in a cosy bubble with fondue, charcuterie and white wine.
Taste a Reblochon tartine in Le Grand-Bornand
For good music, friendly people, an arty atmosphere (next door is the artistic project Grandborama)and especially the delicious tartines – we’ve fallen in love with this place. Nestled at the foot of the Envers piste at the heart of the Grand-Bornand ski area, the pop-up bar L’Esperluette is an obligatory après-ski spot for before you head back to your chalet. Address: Plaine du Terminal, 74450 Le Grand-Bornand
Take on a burger challenge in Les Arcs 1800
At the heart of Les Villards, close to Les Arcs 1800, Bar King Mad is THE burger joint to have on your radar. Opened by two snowboarders Rob and Phil, the bar-restaurant combines a love of mountain sport, music and quality food. You only have to see the nine burgers on the menu: all use high-quality beef, prepared with secret recipes unique to the establishment. For the more adventurous, the chef’s burger is a challenge all by itself. It remains to be seen if you’ll have the courage to finish it all… Address: Center Cial Villards 1800, Route des Espagnols, 73700 Les Arcs
Enjoy a beer at the new brewery Les Houches
The real outsider on this list is the Solerey Brew Pub. A must for anyone who loves micro-breweries as well as quality meat and local vegetarian dishes. The USP: all beers are made using glacier water from the Mont Blanc Massif. Address: 81 Avenue des Alpages, Les Houches
