They are welcoming, reassuring, saturated with sunshine, lively, natural, authentic and, above all, perfect for families. Which are the best Family Plus resorts in the Southern French Alps?

No time to be bored in Devoluy

Whether you're skiing at Superdévoluy or La joue du Loup, ‘Family First’ is everywhere. While the resort's slopes are reassuringly varied and accessible (there are several beginners' areas), the “Family Pass” offers preferential rates for four passes purchased. In terms of facilities, we love the resort for its snowpark designed for little riders, with mini big air and a beginners' line, its hammock at the bottom of the slopes for the little ones, its many picnic areas and, above all, its “pushchair-friendly” nature walks for a real return to the roots. Find all the information in the Dévoluy Family Guide (french).

Darling, we can arrange childcare in Valberg!

Known for its ‘les petits poucets ’ crèche, which caters for children aged 3 months to 6 years, this year Valberg is also offering parents the chance to look after their older children. Aimed at children aged 6 to 12, the ‘Louis Pichins della Mountagno’ mini club is available for full or half days. The aim is to give (older) children the opportunity to learn a little more about the identity of the resort through themes such as the environment and local culture.

Everyone on the track in Le Sauze

In the middle of the Sauze resort, on the ski slopes and snowshoe trails, charades, riddles and treasure hunts are the order of the day. Leading the way? The resort's mascot, Valentin le Bouquetin. He leads the small groups along a playful nature trail. Little freestylers can also have fun on the ‘piste C’, entirely dedicated to families. To test their limits in complete peace and quiet, six special areas have been set aside in the Kid Park.

Baby snow and baby sled in Orcières-Merlette

There's no age limit for your first shot of adrenalin. Yes, it is possible to enjoy ‘Baby Snow’ from the age of 12 months in Orcières-Merlette. Comfortably seated on a board equipped with handlebars and linked to the ESF instructor, babies are trained to hurtle down the slopes in complete safety. In the Baby Park at the Orcières Leisure Centre (french), children aged 3 to 7 can also slip into the shoes of a musher. On the programme: sled handling and safety instructions.

Take the Orrian Express to Les Orres

Officially voted the children's favourite activity, rail tobogganing is attracting crowds for its thrills, suitable for all the family. Named the Orrian Express after the famous Orient Express train, this activity at Les Orres offers a 1,600 m run and a 710 m descent, with 360° twists and tunnels under the snow.

Keeping cool in an igloo in the Ecrins region

Perched in the resort of Pelvoux-Vallouise, the Pelvoo Igloo is a special place, popular with families looking for new experiences. The village offers a poetic journey, that of Lula. On the programme: a look at the cycle of life, or how a drop of water can cross mountains and tides to spread life. Inside the igloo, you'll find ephemeral sculptures from the Haute-Alpes, an Escape-Game, a 30-seat geodesic dome suitable for 360° film projections, a play area and a delicious crêperie for family meals.

Enrol children at the ‘1000 Patte’ in Montgenèvre

It's the biggest gathering of young skiers in France, and it takes place in Montgenèvre. Every year, the ‘ 1000 Patte ’ race attracts thousands of families for its fun, timed competitions for young athletes aged 5 to 10. Held at the beginning of April 2020, the event will devote Saturday to entertainment and Sunday to sporting events (slaloms, toboggan runs and prize-giving ceremonies). At the finish, there'll be no jealousy: everyone will receive gifts.
