Lille Museum of Modern, Contemporary and Outsider Art (LaM) is a unique cultural space in the north of France. You are invited to view a condensed history of art in the 20th and 21st centuries, where the modern, contemporary and outsider art are brought together in a collection of international standing.
With its setting, tucked away in a park punctuated by works by Alexander Calder, Pablo Picasso and Euène Dodeigne (248,000 square feet), this northern museum states its intentions. Here, you are in a temple of modern art that exposes, in all its beauty, the best works of the genre.
Modern, Contemporary and Outsider art: 3 collections and more than 7,000 works, exposed in 43,000 square feet of space, are the backbone of this museum that is in all aspects remarkable. Each of these artistic genres offers, at once, a discovery of great works from the history of art as well as a subtle progression through themes.
Modern Art
The museum’s collection highlights works that are among the most representative of the modern period in the first half of the 20th century. 500 pieces signed by artists such as Georges Braque, Bernard Buffet, Vassily Kandinsky, and last but not least Amadeo Modigliani.
Contemporary Art
Contemporary art never stops. A concept illustrated by major installations of Art & Language, Alighiero Boetti, Christian Boltanski, Matt Mullican or Annette Messager.
The collection is enrichened by a foundation of important abstract paintings and sculpture from 1950 – 1990: artists such as Martin Barré, Daniel Buren, Richard Deacon, Daniel Dezeuze, Gérard Duchêne, Pierre Soulages. As well as featured artists: Bernard Buffet, Eugène Dodeigne, Eugène Leroy.
Outsider Art
Finally, Outsider Art, a concept coined by Jean Dubuffet in 1945, largely connected to the LaM.
Defined by a regrouping of pieces created by non-professional artists, without artistic reference and worked outside of the aesthetic norm, Outsider Art is exhibited at the museum via a prism of well-known artists, such as Aloïse Corbaz, Joseph Crépin, Henry Darger, Auguste Forestier, Carlo Zinelli.
Other than the permanent collection, numerous temporary expositions are organized throughout the year, which lends the museum a sense of being contemporary.
