In the event of an emergency or inconvenience, have the right reflexes. Here are the emergency numbers you need to know while in France.
In an emergency
In all cases, be prepared to answer three questions: who am I (give a telephone number), where am I (precise address) and why am I calling?
If you witness or are the victim of an accident, here are the emergency numbers to use :
- SAMU (medical emergencies): 15
- Police emergency: 17
- Fire brigade: 18
- European emergency number: 112
- Emergency number for the deaf and hard of hearing: 114
- For emergencies at sea: 196
- For aeronautical emergencies: 191

In case of loss :
Your papers: report the loss to the police station, who will give you a receipt, then contact your consulate.
Your keys or an object: ask the police station for the lost property number (in Paris, 01.53.73.53.71).
If this happens to you on a train: 0892.35.35.35 or 3635 then #22*) €0.40; at an airport, go to the airport police within 15 days.
Your car: the police station will register your complaint or refer you to the pound if your badly parked car has been removed by the police. .
Your credit card: stop payment as soon as possible, then report the matter to the police station.
Call your local stop payment centre or, depending on your card, contact the stop payment centres in France: 0.892.705.705, or from abroad: +33.442.605.303.
An animal: contact the Société de Protection des Animaux (SPA). +33(0).1.43.80.40.66
In the event of a dispute :
With a hotel, restaurant or shopkeeper. Contact the Direction Départementale de la Concurrence, de la Consommation et de la Répression des Fraudes (DGCCRF) in the département where the incident occurred.
