Don't miss the charming towns of Dordogne-Périgord such as Périgueux, capital of the department, Bergerac, Sarlat, Brantôme-en-Perigord, Beynac-et-Cazenac, Castelnaud La Chapelle, La Roque Gageac...
With 10 sites classified as “Most Beautiful Villages of France” , Dordogne-Périgord tops the list of French destinations with the most classified villages along with the Aveyron department. In France, only 153 villages have this label.
A destination without megacities, with cities on a human scale: Périgueux, the capital of the department, Bergerac and Sarlat are classified as " Cities of Art and History " thanks to the vast heritage they possess. Did you know? Sarlat is the first city in Europe to be classified for its number of classified buildings (253 buildings, 18 classified monuments and 59 listed monuments). This city is a true testament to the medieval and Renaissance periods.
Excideuil, Saint-Cyprien or Saint Aulaye Puymangou are classified as " Petite cité de Caractère " (Small Towns of Character). This concept highlights a remarkable heritage.
The restored medieval villages or bastides that dot the Dordogne-Périgord landscape have retained their souls. Among them, 10 have been classified as “Most Beautiful Villages in France”: following the Dordogne valley, you can discover the medieval village of Domme (French bastide) with a panoramic view of the valley, Beynac-et-Cazenac, Castelnaud La Chapelle, La Roque Gageac and Limeuil , located at the confluence of the Dordogne and Vézère rivers. The Vézère valley has two villages: Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère and Coly saint Amand . These typical Périgord villages will charm you with their authenticity, their architecture and the peace and quiet that emanates from them.
Other villages in the Dordogne-Perigord are worth a visit, such as the medieval village of Belvès , perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Nauze valley, or the well-preserved English fortified town of Monpazier, considered the most typical example of the fortified towns of south-west France. Further north in the department, the picturesque village of Saint-Jean-de-Côle, crossed by the river Côle, is a charming stopover in the Green Périgord.
