Discover a gentle way to travel in the Loire Valley. Leave everyday life behind and enjoy a quiet holiday for two in the countryside. How about these five experiences to start you off?
Explore the Loire by bike
Along the Loire à Vélo ('Loire by Bike') cycle route, you can admire the last completely natural river in Europe in all its beauty, over a choice of more than 900 kilometres. There are small sandbanks and islets, vineyards on both sides of the river, typical villages and towns and, of course, the magnificent chateaux. Whether you want to spend a weekend or a whole week in the saddle, it's up to you. Numerous businesses bearing the 'Accueil Vélo' label will help you plan your ride.\
Take a traditional boat trip on the Loire
The boatmen of the Loire are very passionate about their job and 'their' river. With their keen eyes, they recognise the different native species of birds and those passing through. They can easily spot the traces of beavers on the banks, they know the best spots for catching pike or catfish... and they're happy to share their knowledge with you on a boat trip. You can also learn a lot about the importance of river navigation on the Loire. The icing on the cake: a picnic on board or on the riverbank. There are plenty of boat trip providers to choose from throughout the Loire Valley.
Have a canoe adventure
Discover the Loire and its tributaries by canoe! You can choose between a one- or two-hour trip, or a multi-day adventure with overnight stays in a tent or bivouac on an island on the Loire. The excursions are suitable for all levels of fitness and bring you closer to nature and wildlife, the beautiful landscapes and Loire châteaux such as Amboise, Chaumont-sur-Loire and Blois. You can also marvel at the châteaux of Chinon and Chenonceau from a canoe.
Go paddleboarding
Try paddleboarding on the Loire! This relaxed way of discovering the water is suitable for everyone. For about an hour, you'll get a whole new perspective on the river and the cultural treasures of the immediate surroundings, such as the estate of Chaumont-sur-Loire. Ideal for disconnecting and bringing body and mind into harmony - try it and see for yourself!
Discover the Loire's jewels on foot
Numerous hiking routes cross the vineyards of the Loire Valley, the ponds of Sologne or through the Loire-Anjou-Touraine regional park. Either explore the natural treasures of the Loire on a short excursion, or a hike over several days. Spot different species of birds, follow the GR3 which takes you beyond the châteaux, or follow a French section of the Chemin de Compostelle. A visit to the Maisons de Loire is a great way to learn more about the royal river through workshops and exhibitions.
