Eight varieties of strawberries produced in the Dordogne-Périgord have obtained the PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) strawberries of the Périgord. This red berry prized by the périgudines was the first to obtain the PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) in Europe, in 2004.

The PGI label certifies that strawberries are produced in the Périgord (their production area), according to varieties selected for their taste potential, and harvested at their optimum ripeness.

There are 11 varieties of strawberries, adapted to the Périgord terroir and grown in the open air, are eligible for the PGI "Fraises du Périgord": Garriguette, Mara des bois, Charlotte, Darselect, Cirafine, Cléry, Murano, Favori, Magnum, Flair and Mariguette.

It's 6 months of pleasure! From April to October, some varieties of strawberries are produced for consumption:

  • The classics: the Gariguette, Darselect, Cléry, Cirafine, Mara des bois and Charlotte.
  • The recent ones: the Murano and Favori.
  • The new ones: the Magnum and Flair.

The development of strawberry culture in this French province began in the 1950s. The Dordogne-Périgord is the second French department in terms of production (after the Lot and the Garonne). Around 200 professionals, united in a growers' organisation, follow this activity which represents 20% of the national production. The traceability of strawberries has become a guarantee of quality.

The village of Vergt, located south of Périgueux, corresponds to what Sorges is for the Périgord black truffle: its favourite land. This is where the know-how of this PGI production is concentrated.

The delicate and sweet flavours of this red fruit are perfect for desserts. It can also be tried in recipes combining sweet and savoury, such as hot fried foie gras.
