When we think of Burgundy, we think of great food and delicious traditional specialities to enjoy as a couple. Whether you’re more into sweet or savoury specialities, this region is gifted when it comes to bringing the best out of the local products. Here’s a programme for a three-day gourmet getaway filled with historic visits, culinary discoveries and romantic establishments. It’s time to embark upon a mini getaway between Beaune and Dijon!
Day 1 : Beaune
Beaune, FranceThe architecture and gourmet delights of Beaune can be explored on foot, starting with a stroll around the indoor market, which is the perfect place to pick up some local goodies such as Morvan honey, Bresse chicken, Burgundy ham, Flavigny aniseed sweets, Négus de Nevers caramels, etc.
A walk around the historic town centre will work up quite an appetite. Stop by one of the many wine bars, brasseries or fine-dining restaurants here. Taste the best snails “à la bourguignonne” at the famous escargotier Hélice.
Your culinary exploration will then lead you to the traditional mustard factory Fallot established in 1840 and open to the public for tours. This visitor’s tour followed by a workshop/tasting session will certainly add some spice to your day!
Then you can concentrate on another speciality of this region: winemaking. Come to the “Paradis des Grands Crus Bourguignons” (Paradise for the great wines of burgundy) workshop and learn about the local grape varieties. The team will guide you through a tasting of six prestigious red and white wines.
Where to stay? The Hostellerie Cèdre & Spa is a beautiful, romantic place to stay overnight and enjoy the elegant, understated atmosphere in this former winegrower’s house from the 19th century. You can also taste some specialities of Burgundy with a twist at the Michelin-starred restaurant here.
Day 2: from Beaune to Gevrey-Chambertin (32 km)
Gevrey-Chambertin, FrancePrepare both your eyes and your tastebuds for a treat on a visit to the fairytale castle of Corton André, a 19th century treasure with traditional glazed tile roof. Such a romantic place.
Then go for a stroll around the gardens of the Château de Savigny-lès-Beaune. Besides the superb medieval architecture to admire here, it is also a winegrowing estate with wine cellars dating back to the 14th and 16th centuries, and home to a private collection of motorbikes, tractors used by the winegrowers and models of planes.
Are you ready for a lunch worthy of the great Dukes of Burgundy? Head to the Rôtisserie du Chambertin, and more specifically to Bistrot Lucien, that serves local gourmet bistro-style cuisine.
Hold off on the dessert until you reach the Cassissium in Nuits-Saint-Georges. This vast museum entirely devoted to blackcurrant grown in the Côte d’Or is a fun, interactive and educational venue to learn about this local fruit, that is also showcased in the form of liqueurs, creams and brandies. This original tour as a couple ends with a tour of the Védrenne factory where liqueurs, syrups and creams are made.
__Another idea :__ the Château d’Entre-Deux-Monts estate boasts a truffle farm and offers truffle-hunting outings followed by a tasting session.
Where to stay? To drift off to sleep in amongst the vines, we recommend the Hôtel de Vougeot with a superb view down over the château bearing the same name. You can expect to eat like a king and sleep like a baby!
Day 3: from Vougeot to Dijon
Dijon, FranceKick off the day with some bubbles at the Verrière Louis Bouillot in Nuits-Saint-Georges. The Art Déco style winter garden is an ideal place to learn all about Crémant de Bourgogne (sparkling wine) on a self-guided tour with an audio guide in six sections.
After a stroll around the beautiful village of Gevrey-Chambertin with an 11th century fortress, we recommend making a quick detour to Brochon where the famous Fromagerie Gaudry offers opportunities to taste Epoisses, the king of Burgundy cheeses.
Exploring Dijon as a couple is all about wandering hand-in-hand around the medieval palaces, half-timbered houses, Art Nouveau buildings and stopping off at the terraces out in front of the trendy bars To make sure you don’t miss any of the must-sees, follow the Tourist Office’s “Parcours de la Chouette” (Owl Trail). Programme: 22 steps to really embrace the charm of the city.
For lunch, head to the fine-dining restaurant, Loiseau des Ducs where Chef Jean-Bruno Gosse adds his own unique touch to the classics of Burgundy cuisine.
After that, pick up some more local specialities at the Boutique de la Truffe, the Maison Maille where mustard has been produced since 1747, then the Mulot & Petitjean spice bread factory that also whisks visitors away on a historic, gourmet experience through 5 distinct exhibition spaces.
How about bringing this gourmet getaway to a close at an exceptional place? The Le Pré aux Clercs is a brasserie that was opened by chef with 3 Michelin stars, Georges Blanc. There’s nothing better than a Michelin star to end this weekend on a high note!
