Paris is always the first city that springs to mind as the ultimate destination for a romantic getaway, but there are other, smaller cities in France that are just as appealing. In the Occitanie region, on the shores of the Mediterranean, Montpellier boasts a warm climate, stunning natural scenery and a fascinating and rather surprising historic and contemporary cultural scene, making it the ideal destination for couples. If love is all about gazing in the same direction, let that direction lead you to Montpellier for three days together in the European Capital of Culture 2028.

Day 1: a discovery of the arts and local heritage

Go for breakfast at Pain Brut where you can sip your coffee and gaze into one another’s eyes as you taste the bread baked by this disciple of Chambelland, who uses traditional varieties of flour to lovingly prepare his organic bread in this city centre bakery.

Go for a leisurely stroll hand-in-hand around the Halles du Lez. This new gourmet temple in Montpellier is open 6 days a week, from 10am to midnight, and is an indoor market, food court and rooftop venue all rolled into one. Producers, shopkeepers, artisans and regional chefs are all united under one roof in this dynamic place devoted to the culinary world. There’s a great atmosphere here and it’s the ideal place for some quality time together for lunch at the gourmet bistro-style Terminal 1.

To enjoy an experience where you can satisfy your curiosity together as a couple, stop by the beautiful art gallery MO.CO.

You'll be enjoying your evening meal in the dimmed lighting of a manor house at the centre of the museum gardens. Unless you prefer the more lively atmosphere of the Bouillon Maurel, for a casual dining experience and to enjoy quality, seasonal products in a bustling area of the city.

Before turning in for the night, go for that unmissable last drink of the evening at Aperture, a small cocktail bar that resembles an art gallery, for a sensual tasting experience.

After this action-packed day, you’ll be staying at the Mas de Lafeuillade. This environmentally friendly establishment has brought the countryside vibe into the city, and provides the perfect dose of discretion and elegance.

Day 2: a chic and environmentally responsible day

For a delicious start to the day, head to IKONKA to sample the best croissant in Montpellier, which just happens to be organic, healthy and top-quality.

As you savour this delicious pastry, wander around the romantic streets of Montpellier’s historic city centre, an unmissable part of the city that you could also choose to explore in the evening.

Stop by Fébéo and pick up some local, fair-trade products for a romantic picnic, that you can enjoy in the beautiful Jardin des Plantes nearby. While you’re there, don’t forget to make a wish at the wishing tree.

Go for dinner at the rooftop bar on the 17th floor of L’Arbre Blanc where you can admire the remarkable architecture, an art gallery and a panoramic view across the city of Montpellier, the sea and the Pic Saint-Loup.

Day 3: nature on the outskirts of the city in Villeneuve-Lès-Maguelone

Just 10 km south of Montpellier, and accessible by bus, Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone is a seaside town with an unspoilt, protected natural environment.

Enjoy a self-guided audio tour of the centre of this medieval town, and then take part in a wine tasting session at the villa Exindrio.

At lunchtime, the turquoise-blue sea and Le Carré Mer just opposite are calling you for a wonderful culinary experience centred around local products and the catch of the day.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can try your hand at kitesurfing in the Mediterranean winds, before then heading to the magical Chai de Maguelone for an exceptional night under the stars.

Tips and suggestions

It may be easy to explore Montpellier on an electric bike, but make sure you take the incredible city centre tram, designed in part by Christian Lacroix, at least once.
