Symbole de l’architecture moderne, Le Corbusier construit 4 bâtiments à Firminy (à 10 km de Saint-Etienne) : la Maison de la Culture, le Stade, l’unité d’Habitation et l’église.
Symbol of modern architecture, Le Corbusier built four buildings in Firminy (10 km from Saint-Etienne): the Maison de la Culture, the Stadium, the Housing Unit and the Church.
The Le Corbusier site in Firminy, the largest European complex imagined by the visionary architect, is now among the monuments listed on the World Heritage List of Humanity. This listing confirms the importance of this work as an essential referent, theoretically and artistically, of the architecture of the 20th and 21st centuries.
This is for the Maison de la Culture of Firminy, an access to the international network of sites recognized by the UN institution in the same way as the city of Saint-Étienne already a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities design network.
The Maison de la Culture is the first building built by the architect, between 1961 and 1965, in the new district of Firminy-Vert. Its exhibition rooms will reveal the history of the Firminy-Vert district and the works of Le Corbusier in the 1960s.
His architecture contributes to the renewal of the forms and spatial conceptions of the modern movement; its construction reveals the avant-gardism of the architect in the use of new techniques, experimentation with materials...
This is why La Maison de la Culture is one of the essential links in Le Corbusier's Work... A unique place for the Loire department ... A place of notoriety serving the territory of Saint-Etienne Métropole and the entire region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes.
Continue your visit with the Stadium, the only stadium classified as a historical monument in France! You will know what a living heritage is. It is used both by visitors from all over the world but also by school sportsmen or amateurs. Visiting the Stade, it is also to enjoy a view of the totality of Le Corbusier's buildings in their urban setting.
Continue your architectural walk with a visit to the Saint-Pierre church. The lower part of the church houses an exhibition centre dedicated to the work of Le Corbusier. Models, original sculptures and a filmed visit of the Unité d'Habitation offer you the secrets of this complete artist: architect, but also sculptor and painter.
